🚨OUR 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY IS FAST APPROACHING! STAY TUNED!🚨

Happy Highliday! But Really, What Does 420 Mean?

You may have heard some gleeful stoners anticipating April 20th’s arrival. Or maybe you’ve noticed signs for 4/20 specials at our Fitchburg pot shop. Whatever the case, if you’re not familiar with the term, you’re probably wondering, what does 420 mean? We’ve got answers.

First, 4/20 represents April 20th. It can also represent the time of day, 4:20. Some people use 420 as a way to refer to weed in general – for example, if you see a house for rent that says “420-friendly,” it means the owner is okay with marijuana smoke. But when it comes down to it, April 20th, 4/20, is the ultimate stoner holiday.

Stoners get a holiday, too

April 20th is the official stoner holiday. It’s simply a day to celebrate all things weed, from products and culture to marijuana policy advocacy. There’s really no right or wrong way to celebrate 4/20, though we recommend getting high, obviously.

You can celebrate alone or with friends, inside or outside, and with whatever products you like. Some people take the opportunity to whip up a strong batch of brownies or cookies, others opt to roll a big blunt to pass around with friends. Whatever you choose, if you’re celebrating weed, you’re doing it right.

Why not make it a week-long celebration? Our Fitchburg weed store is celebrating 4/20 for five whole days, from April 15th to April 20th. There are no rules!

But where did 4/20 come from?

Most stoners know that 4/20 is an iconic date, number, and time of day. But where did it originate?

It’s up for debate. We may never know the true origin of 4/20, but we can draw conclusions based on what we know. The most widely accepted origin of the holiday comes from the 1970s when a group of teenagers in California built a ritual of smoking weed every afternoon at 4:20. It is a pretty good time to smoke up, after all.

Eventually, the ritual made its way to more people, and the term 420 became synonymous with weed smoking. The calendar adaptation of 4/20 came later and allowed smokers around the world to celebrate the plant on one unified day. Now we know 420 to universally refer to consuming cannabis, and we have April 20th to look forward to each year.

How do I celebrate 4/20?

Again, there are no rules. But if you’re looking to celebrate 4/20, we recommend switching up your normal consumption routine. If you typically smoke joints, maybe it’s time to roll up a big blunt or bring out that bong that tends to get you higher than you expected. It’s all about celebration, so do something different and fun!

If you tend to lean on the policy and advocacy side, take the day to write to representatives or talk to others about marijuana reform. Now that Massachusetts has legal cannabis, many people have moved on from pushing for marijuana reform. But there is always more to be done, and if you feel strongly about an issue, 4/20 is the perfect holiday to flex your activism muscles.

For those looking to have a social time, meet up with some friends and enjoy passing around the bong, pipe, joint, blunt, or whatever you choose in the company of loved ones. Take the afternoon to relax, giggle, and enjoy the community that cannabis can provide.

Grab some edibles from our Fitchburg dispensary or bake up your own goodies to share among friends. Just remember that edibles have a delayed effect, and if you don’t know how much you’ve dosed your homemade goods with, you’ll want to start with a very small amount and go slow. You don’t want any unpleasant high surprises.

Products to inspire a 4/20 celebration

As we mentioned earlier, you can’t really celebrate 4/20 wrong. If you’re celebrating the plant, you’re doing it right. But there are some items on our menu that we think are fit for the day, and we’ve rounded up some ideas to inspire your celebration.

Infused joints

There are joints…and then there are infused joints. Let’s just say, you’ll know the difference after one puff. Infused joints are your regular prerolls filled with flower but with an added bonus: cannabis concentrates. Rosin, wax, and other extracts are added to the preroll to take it from a typical smoke to a mind blast.

Most prerolls range from 12 to 25% THC, but infused ones typically have between 30-40% THC in them. They’re significantly more potent and are perfect for celebrating a special day.

Live Rosin

Dab in style for 4/20 with live rosin. This solvent-less extract is made from the resin glands of the plant and maintains a full spectrum quality. Live rosin tastes great and is shelf-stable and unadulterated. If you want a special treat to dab this highliday, go for some live rosin.

Red Velvet Truffles

Celebrations call for cake, right? Insa makes a delicious infused red velvet chocolate truffle that is perfect for celebrating any holiday and especially fitting for 4/20. Red Velvet Cake Truffles combine rich red velvet ganache in a delicate shell of smooth European milk chocolate—with just 5 mg per serving, you can eat a decent amount without accidentally knocking yourself out. So dig in!

We might not know exactly how or when the term 420 came to be, but we do know that it’s here to stay. From the afternoon pick-me-up at 4:20 p.m. to the all-day celebration on April 20th, we love all things 420. And if you’re looking to celebrate the holiday with some weed, we’ve got you covered.
