Traveling with cannabis in your car 

Traveling with cannabis is often simply transporting the product from the Fitchburg dispensary to your home. This seems easy enough, but consumers should be aware of certain rules. 

You can legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana outside of your home, including inside your vehicle. When transporting cannabis in a car, it must be in a sealed container or locked inside the trunk or a locked glove compartment.

Driving across state lines with cannabis 

A common misconception in states with legal adult-use cannabis is that crossing state lines with cannabis is okay. After all, if you’re traveling from one legal state to another, where’s the harm? 

While cannabis in Massachusetts is legal on a state level, it is still illegal on the federal level. As such, crossing state lines with cannabis from one state to another is illegal. 

Some people think they can legally drive with Massachusetts cannabis to Connecticut, New York, or other bordering states. In reality, if you want to enjoy legal cannabis in another state, you have to wait until you get there and purchase it directly from a dispensary. 

Can I fly with Massachusetts weed? 

It’s against the law to fly with weed from anywhere in Massachusetts. Even if you didn’t get to finish the stash you picked up from our Fitchburg dispensary, you can’t take it on your flight. 

It’s a little confusing, though. After all, adults are allowed to carry up to an ounce of cannabis. Assuming you go through the airport carrying less than the legal amount, you may think you’re being compliant. This is not the case. 

Under federal law, carrying cannabis through TSA checkpoints is prohibited. As such, any possession, even legal amounts, can be considered a crime. If you are caught carrying marijuana through Logan Airport, for example, TSA will contact Massachusetts State Police. The response will depend on the amount of cannabis you possess. 

Generally, small amounts will not result in any charges. In fact, it’s likely you will be asked to give the marijuana to someone who can possess it or dispose of it before moving forward. 

The Massachusetts State Police have made it clear that they do not search for marijuana. Their searches are focused on security and safety, not seizing small amounts of cannabis. They’ve also made it clear that they can’t ignore cannabis if they find it, though.

“Are we cool? We like to think we’re cool. We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow.

Let us be blunt: TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement. This includes items that are used for medicinal purposes.”

I’m in town from out of state, what else should I know?
