Traveling with Cannabis in Fitchburg? Here’s What You Should Know

Traveling with Cannabis in Fitchburg? Here's What You Should Know

Adjusting to legal cannabis in Massachusetts comes with a learning curve. Consumers should know the rules for traveling with cannabis in Fitchburg, throughout the state, and across the country.

In Massachusetts, adult-use, recreational cannabis is legal under state law. Under federal law, however, the plant remains illegal. This disconnect between state and federal law has created many confusing rules for both cannabis users living in the state and those just visiting.

When it comes to transporting cannabis, the laws can get even fuzzier. Can you take Fitchburg cannabis to Connecticut or New York, where cannabis is legal? Can tourists mail their favorite strain back home to another state with legal marijuana?

These are common questions. We’ll provide some clarity on what you can and can’t do when traveling with cannabis in Fitchburg and across the state. Let’s jump into the rules so you can stay high and out of trouble!

Traveling with cannabis in your car

Traveling with Cannabis in Fitchburg? Here's What You Should Know

Traveling with cannabis is often simply transporting the product from the Fitchburg dispensary to your home. This seems easy enough, but consumers should be aware of certain rules.

You can legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana outside of your home, including inside your vehicle. When transporting cannabis in a car, it must be in a sealed container or locked inside the trunk or a locked glove compartment.

Traveling from a Fitchburg pot shop to your home with a sealed cannabis product is fine. It’s only if you open the packaging that you must lock up the product and keep it away in a trunk or glove compartment. If you feel inclined to open up your flower and take a sniff, be sure to lock it away until you get home. Or just keep it simple and open the product when you’re done driving.

Driving across state lines with cannabis

A common misconception in states with legal adult-use cannabis is that crossing state lines with cannabis is okay. After all, if you’re traveling from one legal state to another, where’s the harm?

While cannabis in Massachusetts is legal on a state level, it is still illegal on the federal level. As such, crossing state lines with cannabis from one state to another is illegal.

Some people think they can legally drive with Massachusetts cannabis to Connecticut, New York, or other bordering states. In reality, if you want to enjoy legal cannabis in another state, you have to wait until you get there and purchase it directly from a dispensary.

Can I fly with Massachusetts weed?

Traveling with Cannabis in Fitchburg? Here's What You Should Know

It’s against the law to fly with weed from anywhere in Massachusetts. Even if you didn’t get to finish the stash you picked up from our Fitchburg dispensary, you can’t take it on your flight.

It’s a little confusing, though. After all, adults are allowed to carry up to an ounce of cannabis. Assuming you go through the airport carrying less than the legal amount, you may think you’re being compliant. This is not the case.

Under federal law, carrying cannabis through TSA checkpoints is prohibited. As such, any possession, even legal amounts, can be considered a crime. If you are caught carrying marijuana through Logan Airport, for example, TSA will contact Massachusetts State Police. The response will depend on the amount of cannabis you possess.

Generally, small amounts will not result in any charges. In fact, it’s likely you will be asked to give the marijuana to someone who can possess it or dispose of it before moving forward.

The Massachusetts State Police have made it clear that they do not search for marijuana. Their searches are focused on security and safety, not seizing small amounts of cannabis. They’ve also made it clear that they can’t ignore cannabis if they find it, though.

This all comes from a 2019 Instagram post by the TSA:

Are we cool? We like to think we’re cool. We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow.

Let us be blunt: TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement. This includes items that are used for medicinal purposes.”

I’m in town from out of state, what else should I know?

Traveling with Cannabis in Fitchburg? Here's What You Should Know

Welcome to Massachusetts! Whether you are from another state with legal cannabis or this is your first time buying recreational weed, we know you’ll enjoy the large variety of products at our Fitchburg weed store.

First things first: Don’t forget your ID. You have to be at least 21 years of age to visit a dispensary and there are no exceptions.

Public consumption is prohibited as well. Wherever tobacco smoking is banned, so is marijuana consumption. Most visitors do just fine with an out of sight, out of mind approach to consuming cannabis in Fitchburg or across the state.

If you’re staying with friends or family at private residences, you’re set up to indulge so long as your hosts are 420-friendly. Always check with your hotel or rental before consuming cannabis. Some are fine with consumption, whereas others strictly prohibit its use.

Of course, never drive under the influence of cannabis. Not only is it dangerous for yourself and others on the road, but you could also end up with criminal charges.

Be mindful of possession limits, as well. You are allowed to carry up to one ounce of flower on your person. Theoretically, you could stock up on several ounces at different dispensaries, but you should never have more than one ounce on you. The remaining amount must be locked up in a secure place wherever you are staying.
