Despite Fitchburg’s lovely small-town feel, fun parks, and tight-knit neighborhoods, we all need to get out of town once in a while and explore our surroundings. Whether you’re a Fitchburg State student looking for a weekend escape from your studies or a local just looking for a Sunday drive, we’ve rounded up some awesome Fitchburg day trips you can take any time.
Walden Pond
Literature students from Fitchburg State and other fans of poetry and philosophy will enjoy a trip to Walden Pond, the historical place of inspiration for Henry David Thoreau.
Regardless of if you’re interested in Thoreau’s work, Walden pond is a great visit for all types of people. Enjoy swimming, walking around, and even boating. There’s also a replica of Thoreau’s cabin that you can visit for some inspiration.
Just a 40-minute drive out of Fitchburg, Walden Pond is located in Concord, Massachusetts, and is perfect for a fun day trip. It’s close enough for a spontaneous drive but has enough to offer that you can plan a full visit.
Boston
We can’t talk about Fitchburg day trips without mentioning Boston. The capital of Massachusetts, Boston is the hub for students, entrepreneurs, artists, and just about anything else you can imagine.
Go shopping, visit the Museum of Fine Arts, eat delicious food, and sight-see to your heart’s content. Up for a walk? Check out the historic Freedom Trail featuring several historical locations significant to the United States.
Located about an hour and a half from Fitchburg, Boston is a great place to head out for a day trip. You don’t need a plan here because there is something to do everywhere you turn.
Cape Cod
Cape Cod is a must-visit staple for anyone in and around Fitchburg. It’s a 2-3 hour drive, depending on the path you take, and it’s well worth the trip.
With 40 miles of expansive seashore, this beach area offers a lot of beauty to take in. There are also pleasant bike trails, a wildlife refuge, gardens, and so much more. Summer may be over, but Cape Cod remains beautiful and refreshing year-round. You can visit the museum or grab some coffee at a local shop if you need to warm up.
Salem
A lot of these Fitchburg day trip ideas stem from historical events. After all, Massachusetts has an incredibly rich history.
Salem is the perfect day trip destination for those interested in the Salem Witch Trials.
The city offers spooky after-dark walking tours, led by modern-day witches. You can also check out the Corwin House (aka the Witch House) as well as Salem’s oldest cemetery. Don’t forget the Salem Witch Museum to round out your witchy visit. Of course, there’s also a gorgeous coastline and plenty of beautiful views to take in outside of the witch-themed activities you can partake in.
Salem is a little under two hours of driving away from Fitchburg. It’s an easy, unique day trip with lots to enjoy.
Portland, Maine
You can’t go wrong leaving Massachusetts for a quick trip to Portland, Maine. It’s just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Fitchburg, allowing you to spend as much or as little time in this waterfront hub.
Start with Old Port if you don’t have a plan. This is a downtown neighborhood known as the city center with endless activities to enjoy. It’s lined with cobblestone streets and maintains an air of history. Shop around, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the historic neighborhood. There’s also an art museum, observatory, beaches, and so much more to do in Portland.
Martha’s Vineyard
Depending on which route you take, a drive out to Martha’s Vineyard can take anywhere from three to four hours. You will also need to take a ferry, given it is an island just south of Cape Cod. While it takes a little work to get here, we think it’s well worth the trip.
Film buffs will enjoy stopping by the Jaws bridge, where a scene from the iconic movie was filmed. Beyond that, you can rent bikes for the day and explore the beautiful island, visit the beach, and of course, go shopping. Don’t think that just because summer is over, Martha’s Vineyard won’t make an amazing destination. In fact, it’s a super popular place to visit for those seeking a cozy winter getaway.
Stay mindful of Massachusetts cannabis laws on your day trips
We know that cannabis can elevate many experiences, including day trips and explorations. If you’re planning to stock up at our Fitchburg weed store before you go, remember that there are several Massachusetts cannabis laws to follow if you don’t want to risk any trouble.
First of all, traveling with weed in Fitchburg and anywhere else should be done with care. Remember to keep any open containers of marijuana locked up and far away from the driver.
Some of these suggested day trips are out of state. You should never cross state lines with cannabis, even if you are entering another legal state. Sure, Maine also has legal weed, but under federal law, crossing state lines with another state’s cannabis is a big no-no.
Public consumption is also illegal. Stay mindful of where you are if you decide to use cannabis. If you are caught consuming in public, you may face a civil penalty of up to $100.
Finally, never drive under the influence of marijuana. Not only is it illegal, but it can also be very unsafe. For the sake of you and your passengers, do not partake if you are going to be driving.
