How to make vegan cannabis coconut oil or cannabutter

If you’re interested in cooking with cannabis, cannabutter or infused coconut oil is a must-have. Once you’ve made yourself a batch of the infused staple, your options for cooking with weed will skyrocket. But if you’re not familiar with infusing your own products, the concept can feel a bit intimidating. Don’t worry, it’s easier than it seems.  We’ll share our cannabutter and vegan cannabis coconut oil recipe with you so you can get cooking!

Before we get started, we want to clarify that the recipe we are using applies to the vegan cannabis coconut oil AND the cannabutter. We are not going to list two separate recipes, but rather, allow you to decide which route you want to take. The butter and coconut oil in the recipe are interchangeable and produce similar products. 

You can also make it vegan without using coconut oil. If there’s a vegan butter on the market that you enjoy, the recipe will work the same with that instead. This brings us to another point: this recipe is customizable. You can increase or decrease the amount of cannabis used for more or less potency, and you can also swap out regular flower for CBD flower to create a non-intoxicating variety. You can also infuse more or less butter or coconut oil, depending on how much infused product you want on hand. Get creative! 

Let’s begin. 

Supplies and ingredients

It doesn’t take a whole lot, but there are some key supplies and ingredients you’ll need to pull off this recipe. Remember, you can adjust the amount of oil/butter or cannabis used to fit your specific needs. 

  • 7 grams of cannabis flower (more or less, depending on desired potency)
  • One cup of butter, vegan butter, or coconut oil
  • Mason jar with a tight-fitting lid large enough to hold a cup of oil or butter
  • Saucepan large enough to hold the mason jar
  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Large spoon
  • Grinder (or follow this to grind weed without a grinder)
  • Cheesecloth or fine strainer
  • Airtight jar or container for storage

How to make cannabis coconut oil or cannabutter, step by step

Before you infuse your butter or oil, you must decarboxylate your cannabis. This just means to heat it at a high enough temperature for a period of time until the THC activates. This step is crucial as it ensures your product will actually get you high. 

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Preheat your oven to 230 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Line parchment paper across your cookie sheet 
  • Grind your weed into small chunks – do not overgrind!
  • Spread the ground weed across the lined cookie sheet
  • Place in oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. Check occasionally and remove early if the flower looks like it is getting too brown or toasted. 

Once you’ve decarboxylated the cannabis, you can start to make the infused oil or butter. 

Here are the steps:

  • Fill the mason jar with coconut oil or butter, leaving enough room for the flower
  • FIll the saucepan with water and bring to a simmer on medium/high (do not boil)
  • Add the decarboxylated flower to the jar with oil or butter and seal tightly
  • Submerge the sealed mason jar in the simmering water
  • Leave in hot water on the stovetop for at least three hours. Don’t go far, as you may need to add water occasionally to prevent any from evaporating. You can also simmer the contents in a crockpot, if you have one. 
  • Remove from saucepan and allow to cool off for 5-10 minutes
  • Strain the butter or oil through a cheesecloth or fine strainer, dropping the strained contents into a new, airtight container
  • Place the vegan cannabis coconut oil or cannabutter in your fridge and use when needed!

Most of the time, this product will last for about two months, but this can vary based on the specifics of your recipe. Always check for signs of the product going bad before consuming. 

How to use cannabutter and infused coconut oil 

This infused product is easy to use and versatile. You can use it in place of butter or coconut oil in most recipes, except for when frying items on high heat. When too hot, the cannabinoids and active compounds will deteriorate, and you won’t get any effects out of the product. 

You can use it for brownies, cookies,  breads, and just about any other baked good requiring butter or oil. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can also make salad dressings, sauces, marinades, and so many other recipes out of the infused product. Your options are endless. 

Don’t want to eat it? You can also use infused coconut oil as a base for topical products, such as salves or body butters.

As we mentioned earlier, this recipe is versatile. You don’t have to use the amount of cannabis or oil we recommended. Instead, you can tailor your recipe to your needs. Just be sure that you know your tolerance and try your concoction in small doses at first to ensure you don’t get too high. And remember, you can also infuse butter or oil with CBD flower for a non-intoxicating, therapeutic option.
